The crystal structure of selenoyl chloride, SeOCl2, has so far not been high up on the agenda in solid state chemistry research. The authors in the article published in Dalton transactions show that it can be used for the subsequent synthesis of novel compounds with the [SeCl3]+ cation, which they stabilized as disulfate [S2O7]2– and chlorosulfate [ClSO3]– salts, respectively. Both SeOCl2 and [SeCl3]+ salts show remarkable macromolecular arrangements and packing motifs in the solid state, so far not or only scarcely analyzed. Additionally they report the stabilization of the dication [Se2I4]2+ in the tetrasulfate salt [Se2I4]2[S4O13]2(SO3).

Our research group focuses on inorganic coordination and solid-state chemistry dealing, amongst others, with inorganic functional materials based on complex oxoanions. A significant part of our research is dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of new substances.
When deriving and/or analysing new compounds, based on both the type of oxoanion selected and the nature of the elements used, we determine their properties, thus addressing the various functionalities that stem from such compounds.
