The authors present 16 novel compounds as the collected results of their investigations toward the methane(poly-)sulfonic acids [H4-xC(SO3)x] (x = 1–3) and their salts with group I and II cations. For the first time, the crystal structures of methanedisulfonic acid MDSA (1) and methanetrisulfonic acid MTSA (2 and 3) have been elucidated, showing that, starting from the reaction of acetone and oleum, the potassium salts of both acids are readily available and can be transferred into the respective oxonium salts, thus enabling neutralization reactions toward several different salts. Our research group focuses on inorganic coordination and solid-state chemistry dealing, amongst others, with inorganic functional materials based on complex oxoanions. A significant part of our research is dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of new substances.
When deriving and/or analysing new compounds, based on both the type of oxoanion selected and the nature of the elements used, we determine their properties, thus addressing the various functionalities that stem from such compounds.
