Structural insights into heavy chalcogen polycations and their stabilization via (hydrogen)polysulfates

The article focusses on the preparation and characterization of [Se4]2+, [Te4]2+ and [Te6]4+ cations. With regard to tellurium compounds, the authors present the first studies on the stabilization and solid-state properties of these compounds in media based on chlorosulfonic acid and sulfur trioxide.

The article by Jan Langwald, Sergi Burguera, Antonio Frontera and Mathias S. Wickleder published in Dalton Transactions presents extensive structural analyses combined with comprehensive computational analysis. The authors' reserach is not only of academic interest to finally elucidate the possible equilibria between cations and anions in these superacidic media but might also bring additional insight for the research on Se/Te species as conductors or battery materials.
