Isolation and Structural Elucidation of the Pnictogen Polysulfate Compounds As₂[S₂O₇]₂[S₃O₁₀] and [SeCl₃][Pn(S₂O₇)₂] (Pn = Sb, Bi)

The study by Jan Langwald, Luisa Ebels, Marios Symeonidis, Jörn Bruns, Antonio Frontera, Mathias S. Wickleder (published in "ZAAC") reports the synthesis and characterization of two novel classes of pnictogen polysulfate compounds.

The image shows the thermal ellipsoid plot of the extended asymmetric unit of [SeCl3][Sb(S2O7)2] shown with 50% probability. The terminal (S--Ot), bridging (S—Obr), coordinating (S--Oco)) and Se--Cl bonds lengths as well as the As--O and S--O distances are given in pm. Cyan dotted lines indicate noncovalent interactions.

For all details on the profound findings of this research using quantum chemical calculations (DFT) to get insights on the molecular electrostatic potential surfaces and performed quantum theory of atoms in molecules and natural bond orbital analyses to quantify the strength of the noncovalent interactions, please go to the ZAAC article in the July 2006 edition
